Why is Inclusion Important?
The Alberta Government defines an inclusive education system as one “ensuring that each and every student belongs and receives a quality education no matter their ability, disability, language, cultural background, gender or age (Alberta Education, 2012).” If we, as future educators, consider this quote, it is clear that no student should feel separated, isolated or excluded. Although creating an inclusive environment should have been the mindset of teachers regardless, it will now be a necessity as inclusion has been mandated by the Alberta Government. Aside from the legal obligation to create inclusive environments, many would argue that it is the ethically noble thing to do. In our 21st century schools, it is crucial that teachers create communities within their classrooms. Not only is this important for the self-esteem and safety of students, but it also helps to instill a mindset of acceptance in all members involved.
The concept of inclusion may appear as something recently introduced to Alberta schools, but it has been a topic of controversy for a number of years. According to the Alberta Teachers' Association, discussions about inclusion have been going on since before 1978. Although inclusive education has been debated for at least the last thirty years, the Alberta Government placed more importance on this concept by introducing the initiative "Action on Inclusion" and making it a priority for Alberta schools in June 2010. Action on Inclusion is no longer an active project for Alberta Education, however, the practices of inclusion must still be present in schools across our province.
